Academy Awards 2011 Sci Fi Fantasy Movies

The 2011 Academy Awards or Oscar 2011, on 27 February 2011, sees a number of sci fi fantasy movies nominated for various categories including Visual Effects, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Music (Original Score), Make Up, Costume Design, Art Direction, Animated Visual Film and Best Picture. Inception starring Ellen Page and Leonardo Dicaprio is a sci fi thinking movie directed by the master Chris Nolan. Inception is based on thieves who are able to steal ideas and secrets from one's sleep using a special dream device and some dream concoctions. The dreamers are tasked with the most difficult mission of them all in the movie Inception - not stealing dreams but implanting an idea into a heir of a multi-billion company - hence the name of the movie Inception. To do this, they have to go 3 layers deep into the dream - equivalent to spending many years in the dreamscape.

The best visual effects really belong to the sci fi fantasy genre for Oscar 2011. 5 films made it into the best visual effects category including Alice in Wonderland, Inception, Harry Porter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, Hereafter and of course Iron Man 2. In Inception, there are many memorable moments for visual effects which have stuck to the brain. Up there with the best has to be the gravity altering and defining moments when Joseph Gordon-Levitt had to fight through some dreamscape guards and against gravity, and save the dreamscapers' bodies as he tries to gather the bodies towards the dream exit point.

Alice in Wonderland takes one on a journey through the wondrous magical land, and lots of mystical creatures and beautiful fairy queens including the levitating cat, the white queen (Anne Hathaway again) and the red queen.

The images most burnt into the brain and unlikely to fade anytime soon has to be the armor changing suit of Iron Man 2. First there was the original iron man suit, followed by the custom mobile bring it anywhere in the world suit at the Monaco racing tracks, followed by the next gen Mark IV iron man suit. And lots of fireworks as the lavish millionaire makes his appearance at the John Starks Convention show and later makes his exit combating the drones with his mate War Machine.

Also expect lots of fireworks when these 5 movies compete for the best visual effects at Oscar 2011.

It is rather obvious that sci fi fantasy movies will play some part in the nomination categories for costume design, art direction and make up. Make up for the Wolfman and the creation of the werewolf was an outstanding feature. Perhaps this film will win the best make up award. Next, let's focus on costume design with the Tempest. The tempest is a medieval fantasy movie based on Prospera's exile to a island, where she becomes the presumptive queen of the island, and commands power over the fate of spirits, lovers, kings and those on the island. The Tempest is based in the 16th century, where the costumes are mostly late medieval style costumes.
